About Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche
Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, son of the renowned Dzogchen meditation
master Tulku Ugyen Rinpoche, is a young teacher of the Karma Kagyu
and Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He teaches extensively in
the West, bringing together traditional Buddhist philosophy and
practice with contemporary culture and science. He is the author of the
best-selling book
The Joy of Living, with a second book expected in 2009.

Lineage: The meditative lineage of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche has been
essential to the development of the study of consciousness in the Tibetan
tradition. The honorary title Rinpoche means “a living human
treasure” -- a title bestowed by lineage holders from the major Tibetan
Buddhist schools to officially recognize the most distinguished
meditation masters. Mingyur Rinpoche’s lineage predecessors, who
trace back to the 17th century, have played a key role in revitalizing
many important contemplative practices. Several texts they composed
were based on direct meditation experiences and have become part of the standard curriculum for the
Tibetan system of mind training. More on

Early Training: The present Mingyur Rinpoche is the 7th in his line and was born in Nepal in 1976. He
received complete training from extraordinary mentors in the two deepest meditation systems –
Mahamudra of the Kagyu School and Dzogchen of the Nyingma School. At the age of 13, he started the
traditional three-year retreat at the renowned Sherab Ling Monastery in India as the youngest such
retreatant known to do so. Upon graduation at age 17, he was appointed by one of his main teachers, H.E.
Tai Situ Rinpoche, to guide the next three-year retreat, becoming retreat master for this and following
retreats. More on

The Present Day: Since then, Rinpoche has taught the methods of meditation to trainers, monastics, and
the general public in Asia, Europe, North America and South America. In addition, he teaches the
traditional philosophical debates according to Tibetan Buddhist scriptures. Rinpoche is also developing a
retreat course together with scientists to integrate Buddhist meditation methods with scientific findings.
